Reflection on event promotion inside CD inlay

(I scanned this piece of inside cover from my collection of clubland albums. This is another template and design which i can use whilst creating a similar design for the group CD cover...Addicted2 Hardcore)

I scanned this image from my 'Clubland x-treme hardcore 3' album. This lets you know what also is available in the clubland series as well as keeping you updated
(i scanned this flyer from HTID 31, Which i was given to at end off a rave)This flyer comes from an hardcore event night 'HTID 31'. It shows you upcoming event nights that HTID promote and organize as well as featuring albums they also produce and informing its consumer how and where to buy them.
Whilst doing textual analysis on the genre 'Hardcore/Dance', I found that inside a lot of the albums series 'Clubland' and 'X-treme hardcore clubland', had a lot of club event promotion and promotion for its website and previous albums created. I have scanned in some research that I  found in my album collection where they apply promotion.

This gave me a great idea in how we can help promote 'Addicted2 hardcore previous albums by having them featured behind the disc, so when the consumer opens the disc they will notice something behind it.

Having 'Raver Baby' as a record label, means we can feature their upcoming events and club nights as well inside the CD. This will be a great to target the consumer as well as promoting the Club night and album.

Reflection on the series of Album covers

My reflections on the 'series' of albums for 'addicted 2 hardcore' follow a well remembered series and are very eye catching. The bright neon colours such as pinks and greens are the codes and conventions I found whilst doing textual analysis on album covers for Hardcore/dance.  The title(Addicted2 Hardcore) is receptive and featured in all the series. The iconic image of a female in a dance pose is similar through out the series of the albums. They also feature the top DJs and Artiste on the front cover to help give popularity to the album as well as targeting its genre consumer taste.

Codes and Conventions
  • Character:Female positioned on the front cover in a medium long shot/medium close-up
  • Facial gesture: seductive, happy, powerful
  • Body language: flirty, dance pose to reflect that particular music genre
  • Costume: bright(neon pinks and blues), reveling, tight and fashionable
  • Framing:tight medium long shot/medium close-up
  • Lighting: high key, flattering on the model. Neon lights to represent the stock setting of the codes and conventions of 'hardcore/dance'
Its clear to say that a lot of my designs and  ideas have changed through out the process of planning and creating the Cd covers for the group. Slight changes such as re-moving titles and changing the font colours have made a hugh change towards the Final piece.

1st draft (a)ideas to NEW FINAL IDEAS (b):
1(a)                                                              1(b)
2(a)                                                                2(b)
3 (a)                                                               3(b)

Reflection on storyboard

(I have scanned and uploaded the storyboard onto the blog)

I have been drawing up the story bored for our music video. it has taken a while because i had to make sure It followed with the the time line. Overall this should help us make filming a lot easier and editing quicker. We must make sure we follow this, so were not of track.

We decided to have a lot of medium close ups of the Female artiste 'Sublime' because it gives a direct mode of address and makes a connection of identity with the artiste. We will apply 'Use and Gratifications' in our music video. We will give the Artiste a personal identity and a personal relationship through camera shots. This will help us gain relationship and connections for its target audience, which is important when trying to represent the artiste.

Draft Mock Ups of our CD

1)Draft of Back Cover

Draft of Front Cover
At the weekend, I started making changes on the CD cover, these are still drafts, as there is still room for improvments.
Firstly I re-changed the image on the front of another girl. The new girl on the front is somebody that were knew and said "we was allowed to take a picture of her for an original image for the album". At the weekend, I edited the image we took on photo shop by changing the hue saturation and the brightness and contrast to create a more warmer and brighter image to help re-create codes and conventions of a club lighting. I had to make sure the colours i selected for the fonts, helped to pin point the colours of the female costume. I feel with this effect, It will make mpre more eye catching for the consumer whilst browsing in a shop, as well as standing out from other competitions on the shelves. I have re-edit the other images for the album series by making sure they followed a common theme 'series' of style in which its consumer would easily recognize the new album is part of the 'addicted 2 hardcore collection.

everything I have produced is from my own original work. I have not copied anybody eles work. The font designs come from a website which allows you to use their font designs. i have only used the font 'Grunge' as a template, i chose the colours and sizes from my original ideas and designs.
  • As a group we need to start collecting and producing pictures of the artiste, so we can start to create an identity and image for her the advert of the single ' walking in the rain'

  • we will hopefully be distributing the single through 'i-tunes',which people will be able to buy and download via the internet which will help target more of a mass audience as well as targeting our target audience

  • we need to look at other media technology which helps promotes music online for unsigned bands. MySpace is a great way, therefore i will need to do research behind this and see how other 'hardcore and dance' artiste have done this to help promote their music.

  • we need to consider how we will apply different theories at the image and making sure we remember our audience profile and apply the codes and conventions for the genre hardcore.

Reflection on draft mock ups

I have created some draft mock ups of the CD front cover 'addicted2 hardcore' on which the artiste will be distributed on. Sublime will be 'created' as well known hardcore artiste. she will be placed next to other well know artiste 'Darren styles' and 'Hixxy'. this will make the album seem more connected to the hardcore genre and the consumer will be familiarly with the popularity of the album if they know if 'Hixxy' is  featured.

The drafts so far i have created are very good but there are still things that can be changed. I am going to be looking to see if i can create a colour theme. from research a lot of the clubland albums, have different colour themes for each of their albums.

MY IDEAS
  1. therefor 'addicted2 hardcore 3' might have a blue/pink colour theme
previous albums might have green/purple. very bright colours which represent the vibe of the music and the setting of the club lights
  • maybe have some other albums the produced 'addcited2 hardcore' have prevously produced in the inlay
  • an event being put on by addicted2 hardcore or by the record label 'raverbaby'

the pictures i have chosen are very suited. they are set in the stock setting of codes convention of a hardcore, which is a club. there are strobe/neon lights to create a feeling of a night life. the gesture and body language is set a dance pose.

Theres whistle and rave gloves, which helps present the style of music which is dance because the costume is dance/rave. similar to what people wear at the clubs/raves.

i well hopfuly have a finshed album cover at the weekend and hopfuly some images of the artiste or is featured on the track 'sublime'.

Draft mock up of 'Addicted 2 HARDCORE 3' front covers and inlay and back CD cover i created for the group!

Assignment-discuss how you constructed an identity for your artist.

Looking at your print products and ideas for your promotional video, discuss how you constructed an identity for your artist.
You should consider issues around gender and youth and discuss how you have challenged or subverted dominant ideology. This should be a discussion of all aspects of mise en scene.

As a record label or producer, trying to construct an image and an identity for an artiste is hard. Trying to have an identity which is ‘new’ ‘original and fresh’ makes an artiste different from the rest even if there are similar artistes in that particular specific genre of music. When trying to construct and identity for an artiste, you need to consider its target audience and whether or not it will appeal to them by their image. This could affect their popularity and also their profits.
From my demographic research, I found that the genre ‘Hardcore/dance’ was the popular choice, so as promoter I know this would be popular however it will be more of a challenge. Given that this is a popular genre, we had to find a track and artiste who hadn’t been realised commercially and also who was unknown. Looking for an artiste, we found ‘Sublime’ who is a new, young female artiste, who fits perfect for our audience profile and fits into a genre of music.

Audience Profile
Age:17-21
Genre: Hardcore/dance
Do you watch music videos: Yes

From research I found that a lot of the ‘hardcore/dance’ tracks were mostly female and had a female vocalist such as styles and breeze- amigos and Breeze vs Lost Witness ft. Naz - Rise Again. The track from ‘sublime’ (walking in the rain) is very fast tempo and has very catchy beats and lyrics. From my questionnaire to the demographic, these were popular features that they enjoyed about this given genre.
However there is a lot of issues around gender and in the ‘hardcore/dance’ female vocalist don’t get enough popularity and status compared to male vocalist. For female vocalist to be successful, their identity has to be seen as a ‘sex image’. Not only must they have a great voice but they must be very proactive, sexy and beautiful. When looking at videos that had female vocalist featured in the video, even though they still had higher status compared to the dancers, they still didn’t have their own identity. In Breeze vs Lost Witness ft. Naz - Rise Again, there were a lot of medium close ups of her body. There weren’t many frames of her face but her body. This proves that not a lot of female vocalist gets a chance to have their own identify in the genre of hardcore. Compared to other well know hardcore artiste, the most popular ones are male such as ‘Darren styles’. There are not a lot of independent female artist who are popular in the hardcore music industry. Therefore for our artiste we will challenge gender by having more frames of the artiste face and not make her seen has a ‘sex symbol’. We will try to make her powerful and empower over the male gender by making her independent. This will be challenging dominant ideology, because we will be overthrowing the dominant class of male gender in the ‘hardcore/dance’ music industry by having a independent, popular female artiste who isn’t categorised in the industry of ‘hardcore/dance’ The synopsise of the music track is for sublime to be getting ready on a night out and forgetting her boyfriend and proving that women can be independent by not having a man by your side.

Looking at ideas for our promotional video of ‘Walking in the rain-Sublime’. We will easily be able to create an image for sublime by following the codes and conventions of ‘hardcore/dance’. Having a target age round 17-21 is young and their may be a lot of problems in making what is suited for that age group. We need to make sure that ‘Sublime’ isn’t seen too sexual, given that the age group will be targeted at 17 however we don’t want to present sublime as ‘old’. Having her young will create an image of something new, fun, exciting and fashionable. This means that older youth won’t be able to so much relate to. From research the CD covers I analyzed were very highly sexualized. The female was usually positioned in the centre usually framed in a medium close up, to show more of the body to appeal the opposite sex. The costume was very skimpy outfits such has bikinis and other revelling costumes. We want to create an image of sublime of an independent woman and not some sex symbol. Ideas such as dress with a slight cleavage would still attract the opposite genre as well as making her attractive and connoting an exciting fun life by being fashionable. We need to bear in mind the youth and target age because we need to consider what’s too revealing. Having a frame of her in medium shot will enable us to show more of features as well as portraying the artiste as a performer by having her in a dance pose.

The music video is following a narrative storyline which will be a lot more engaging for the target age because they won’t be disorientated. One of sublime location will be a bedroom therefore, as a group we need to make sure that there isn’t any inappropriate framing of her getting undressed due to the age group. Having scenes of her putting on make up will appeal her to both genders and make her attractive. There will be dance scenes given that this is a hardcore/dance genre. This will connote a rebellion image and identity for sublime because it will portray her having a fun and exciting life by going clubbing. The lighting will be very flattering; bright neon which is a code and convention we found very common the music videos we researched.
If we follow the codes and conventions of ‘hardcore/dance’ we will be able to create a successful identity for our artiste. By challenging gender, we will be able to create and image which is something new in the hardcore/dance industry which will hopefully make our artiste, unique
and popular for both genders  .

Reflection on research and font ideas

I have now began thinking of ideas for a CD cover names and ways to advertise our artiste''' sublime

  • As a group we need to start taking pictures of the artiste who is being featured on the video. this will help promote to the track as well as attracting the cosumer who enjoys this particular genre of music.

  1. we need to think of costume, setting, lighting ect. We have already done research for the codes and conventions of this genre, so we will be able to represent the artiste well by apply audience theory and 'use and gratification' towards the artiste. this will connect her to the audience more through camera shots and costume ect.
  • hopefully in the week, will have a couple of pictures of the artiste. We will book the studio out and use a professional camera so the image its clear and crisp. booking a studio out will mean we can edit the photo and place the font on the top.
I did some research via the internet for font ideas. I selected and created on a website and did a couple ideas and chose the best which would be suited and appropriate for the genre next to the image it will be positioned on top of. Here are some drafts and ideas I came up with.
1)
2)

This is my final idea which i like the best!:
3)

i have selected this as my final a font title which will be suited for the artiste which is very military style and suits the Hardcore image. This font will be placed on top of the image on the album cover.

reflection on Script: With stage directions.

we produced a script time line which is a second by second account of our video. alice checked this along with the music track and it flows very well. This will give us a very detailed account of the storyline whilst filming the video, and will help us doing our storyboards as we know the timing exactly.

Script: With stage directions.

Working Document

Lizzie

This is fine but you need to amend dates etc and add to it in terms of reflections and amendments made in light of presentations etc. Make sure you reflect on the decisions yo have made.  Make sure you link to images/video etc. Also you may want to 'tidy' it up a bit and put into folders????

Reflection on Front album cover inspiration

we are now starting research on Cd covers. I have started doing research on fonts for the album cover and Ideas of poses for the artiste and CD Cover.

  (idea for a dance pose)

When researching I found that a lot of artiste who are featured on the album released and distributed their track through an album full of single tracks, such as 'clubland'.

Clubland is a series of albums which releases music hardcore/commercial dance. this is very appropriate for the demographic audience from my research.

I have done a lot of research into covers and have come up with a draft idea of the album. We thought of a name which would be featured almost an iconic symbol in which people would recognize when hearing or seeing. we decided to call the album 'ADDICTED2 HARDCORE. this album will feature our artiste 'sublime'.

"I thought off many names for the album such as":
  • The Sound Of The Hardcore
  • Need 4 Hardcore
  • Ministry Of Hardcore
  • The Best of Hardcore
  • Summer Slammer
However 'ADDICTED2 HARDCORE' was the popular choice out of the list i came up with

(inspiration image: and stimulus clubland series)
colours are bright. neon
setting: club
position and gesture: dance/seductive featuring a female on the front

"i have produced and sketched out a hand drawing of an idea"

From looking at all my textual analysis and research on album covers for the genre 'Hardcore/dance'. I can use this as a template and a guide for when i start to do my front cover. i have made notes as guides and reminders of the codes and conventions!

Colours: are bright, neon (pink, green and blues)
Stock setting: club
position and gesture: dance/seductive featuring a female on the front

reflection on the Pitch

As a group we had to pitch our ideas to the class and explain our ideas and thoughts and designs on how we would represent the artiste and ways will would distribute the single and the synopsis for the video.  This made us realize how a music produce and record company would have to do this. We placed our ideas on a Microsoft powerpoint. We added the song from YouTube which allowed the class to hear the track will be doing. For the Synopsis off the music video, i thought it would be a good idea if the class closed their eyes whilst the track was playing in the background and me talking through the synopsis of the video. This was very effective because the class was able to visualize in their head on what we hope to achieve when we come to make the music video.

Assignment- Ideas for the music video

HOW FAR DO YOUR GROUPS IDEAS FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO CONFORM TO CONVENTION?

Individual as a group, we did our own textual analysis into comparable texts for analysing different music videos. Calculating up the results, our popular genre choice of music from our demographic research was ‘HARDCORE/COMMERCIAL DANCE’. As a group, we analysed the genre music videos and got an excellent idea of what the typical codes and conventions for that particular style of genre, which meant we had a clear idea of how we could represent the genre and artiste better by understanding the conventions.

As a group, we had similar ideas and common results whilst doing individual research; therefore we brought our ideas together and discussed how our research will make a high quality music video.

Typically we found that the stock setting was mainly portraying a dance scene, which meant it was usually located outside or in a night club. For example: Ultrabeat ‘Pretty Green Eyes’. This setting was located in a club and was the main connection between the storyline because it was focusing on a dancer’s life. Therefore our ideas for the music will be located in a club or a bedroom. This means the audience can relate to the character more if it’s located in a more realism setting. They can connect more to the setting location if its familiar which helps make the video more welcoming.

The characters in the music videos we analyzed all contained a female vocalist who is featured on the track. For example the video I analyzed Breeze vs Lost Witness ft. Naz - Rise Again, Naz the singer was featured in the video and was portrayed as the main character. Having the artiste featured in the video helps bring statues to video because it helps connect the audience more because they can see the artiste who sings the track.

We found that the female gender had a high influence in the videos and are represented as sexual objects. This was usually done by the position of the female vocalist in centre frame viewing in a medium close up of her face and her body.

(Breeze vs Lost Witness ft. Naz - Rise Again)

This immediately makes character seem provocative and gives her a sexual identity by the close up of her body.

This allows the audience to be aware of the artists importance in the song, however to attract them to the video. Our ideas for the music video will contain a female character, to attract the opposite gender by having a lot of medium close up of her face and body, which allows the audience to view the characters emotions and body language more. Nevertheless both genders can relate to the character both physical and emotionally.

The music videos we analyzed followed a constructed linear narrative however some didn’t have any connection between the track and video.

A bad example of a music video which didn’t follow a narrative structure was Breeze vs Lost Witness ft. Naz - Rise Again. The video was just focoused on the artiste singing and a couple of dancers dancing in the background. The setting had no connection to the song. It had no character functions and it was bit confusing.

We found that the music videos that followed a liner narrative with some relevance to the non- diegetic track being played in the background was a lot more engaging and effective.

A good example I found of a music video which followed a narrative structure and character functions was Basshunter ‘Now you’re gone’.

We see a princess:

A hero: these two are boyfriend and girlfriend, however they split up. The lyrics ‘Now Your Gone’ helps to relate the narrative to the music video. The setting is in a club and a bedroom. They use every day props such a mobile phones. They all get ready to go out on the night to a club. They bang into each other and make up. It all ends in a happy ending.

We will apply Propps theory, which follows a narrative structure and use the characters functions given roles such as a ‘princess’ and ‘hero’. This will be very effective in engaging the audience and will also give structure to the music video which means its audience won’t be disorientated.

Understand the Mise en scene of genre ‘HARDCORE/COMMERCIAL DANCE’ will make our video better. We found the lighting was low key which helped add an element of rebellion and made the characters seem more glamorous. The editing is very fast paced, however this is representing the genre of music about this video as well as following the rhythm and beats along the song. This effect makes the video more alive and fun.

There are a lot of jump cuts to the female artiste and the backing dancers.

The costume of the dancers follow the conventions of representing the hardcore music style, The costumes are very skimpy and revealing however, they are a lot more commercial than the typical raving outfit.

(Ultrabeat - Pretty green eyes)
