reflection on ULTRABEAT- PRETTY GREEN EYES

ULTRABEAT- PRETTY GREEN EYES

The music video seems to follow a constructed narrative plot against the song being played in the background..There is a lot of sexual contact in the beginning of the video towards the young female, which most male gender would find appealing because they see that female as a sex object. The pace of the editing of the young girl getting ready is slowed down, to make her a lot more flirtatious and appealing when she slowly puts on her fishnets.

However there is a lot of issues around gender and in the ‘hardcore/dance’ female's don’t get enough popularity and status compared to male genders. For females, their identity has to be seen as a ‘sex image’.They must be very proactive, sexy and beautiful. When looking at 'pretty green eyes', the female featured in the video didn’t have her own identity. There were a lot of medium close ups of her body. There weren’t many frames of her face but her body. This proves that not a lot of females gets a chance to have their own identify in the genre of hardcore.

The ‘male’ artist who produced this song is featured in this video as a prop in the narrative story line and is playing an admire of the young girl, however by his facial expression, he is more interested in her personality than seeing her as sexual object. This plot narrative helps follow the lyrics of the track

“Pretty green eyes, So full of sparkle and such light”
The communication to the audience from the character portrays a strong symbol of woman, because she is considered an object, but is in control by her seductive dance moves, which empower over the men’s feelings in the night club. This speak to the audience that woman can be seductive, but in power at the same time.
The dance moves attract the intended audience by keeping the engage because they have to follow the narrative of the song. This video helps present the music ‘DANCE/ HARDCORE’ as something seductive but portrays this artist style as something catchy by the lyrics and fast by the beats, which are all convention of a track for dance.

Typically we found that the stock setting was mainly portraying a dance scene, which meant it was usually located outside or in a night club. For example: Ultrabeat ‘Pretty Green Eyes’. This setting was located in a club and was the main connection between the storyline because it was focusing on a dancer’s life.

STYLES & BREEZE- AMIGOS

This music video follows a narrative plot, however there is as no relevance to the song lyrics. The video follows a plot that involves the artists: Styles and Breeze and the female vocalist in a car chase scene and club scene. This link well to genre hardcore because these are typical stock settings to represent the genre because both are fast and exciting.

The setting is set in New York and is focused around an event night in a club in New York. This is a typical setting location to hear this sort of music, therefore its audience can relate to the video.

The position of the camera follows the female vocalist in the car chase scene with a lot of medium close up and close ups to get greater exposure of her singing, which creates an emotion realism to the singer because the audience can feel connected to her or even relate to her. The pace of the video is very fast, which helps build up the tension between the characters and the narrate plot of the chase scene.  The effect this has makes the audience feel excited due to the fast pace, which it connected well to represent the genre hardcore music rhythm.

The female vocalist costume stands out from the other dancers in the dance scenes. Her black tight leather outfit connotes a rebellious side to the character aswell as drawing more attention to the character which attracts its target audience into viewing the video.

The dance club scene lighting is a lot darker to help build a sense of night out.

Having the artiste who has helped produced and remixed this song, helps add creditability to this song; because it gives an impression that they are proud of this track and want to be involved in it more hands on. Having them also featured in the video adds popularity, because its target audience would be more engaged and excited in seeing there favourite DJ in the video.

BASSHUNTER- NOW YOU’RE GONE

Reflection on BREEZE vs LOST WITNESS FT.NAZ- RISE AGAIN music vidoe

BREEZE vs. LOST WITNESS FT.NAZ- RISE AGAIN-

For example the video I analyzed Breeze vs Lost Witness ft. Naz - Rise Again, Naz the singer was featured in the video and was portrayed as the main character. Having the artiste featured in the video helps bring statues to video because it helps connect the audience more because they can see the artiste who sings the track
I found that the female gender had a high influence in the videos and are represented as sexual objects. This was usually done by the position of the female vocalist in centre frame viewing in a medium close up of her face and her body.

This immediately makes character seem provocative and gives her a sexual identity by the close up of her body.
This allows the audience to be aware of the artists importance in the song, however to attract them to the video.
The video was just focoused on the artiste singing and a couple of dancers dancing in the background. The setting had no connection to the song. It had no character functions and it was bit confusing.

This music video doesn’t seem to follow a constructed narrative. Her eye makeup is very vibrant and is contrasted with the background in a shade of purple which helps make her eyes stand out more.
Naz is the important character in this video so her positioning is centred in the middle with an extreme close up. This portrays the dominance of the artiste and connotes she is important in the video. This allows the audience to be spoken in a direct mode of address. It give more of an identity and connection if the audience feels connected to the character. This was done through extreme close ups of her face This allows status to Naz as well as making her identity.
There is a lot of jump cuts to the female artiste and the backing dancers, however it is edited well which doesn’t leave the audience disoriented.
The editing is very fast paced which connects to the beats of the genre of music, This effect makes the video more alive and fun which will help to engage the audience.
The lighting is very low-key, almost to represent night, which connotes a rebellious side towards the character.

The well choreographs dancer moves communicate well for this music genre by representing hardcore. The moves are very fast, seductive and uplifting which helps engaging the audience by making the music video enjoyable to watch. It also attracts both gender in the music video.

It is clear who the target audience are by the style of music. This is a very fast, clubland song track, which is attracted to dance fans.
There are no props in this music video; however the use of rain is used in a dramatic way. The rain helps promote a sexy, seductive side to this song, by spaying rain onto the dancers, as well as the DJs who help mix this song. Seeing the dancers covered in rain and dancing provocatively, portrays woman gender as sex objects, something enjoyable to look at, which is why there is only 1 male dancer and all the rest are girls.
Her costume of the dancers follow the conventions of representing the hardcore music style, The costumes are very skimpy and revealing however, they are a lot more commercial than the typical raving outfit,. This is probably due to the fact that they need to attract a mass audience instead of isolating and targeting just hardcore fans. The setting is outside in front of abandon garage, however the typical codes and convention is that it is filmed at night to represent the night life of partying.

Costume: The costume is a lot more modern compared to the other clubland albums I have analyzed. The costume seems to be a simple club outfit, however I think this is due to the fact clubland is a lot more commercial, so it needs to attract and target more of a mass variety of audience compared to the ‘clubland-x-treme’ which more targeted at hardcore fans.
Title/ font: The logo ‘CLUBLAND’ is placed in the centre on top of the image. The title is very big which draws attention because it is a very well known logo, which helps sell this product. The number 14 font looks very electric which could help present this genre of music about this album.

SUMMERY OF FINDINGS AND AUDIENCE PROFILE- AUDIENCE RESEARCH

SUMMERY OF FINDINGS AND AUDIENCE PROFILE- AUDIENCE RESEARCH

SUMMERY OF FINDINGS:After doing all my research I have now a target audience. I have asked a range of 30 people for this questionnaire from different genders and ages to help get a fair idea.

MY TARGET AUDIENCE:  will be aimed at females aged between 16-21 who enjoy ‘DANCE/ HARDCORE DANCE.

IDEAS OBTAINED TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT: I will be creating a cover for a release of the CD, a magazine advert and a music video.

  • For my music promo video, which has to contain: fast tempo, a female vocal voice and good happy song which people will enjoy listening to? The lyrics will need to be catchy in which people can relate to through emotions and past experiences.
  • The track I choose, the music video must relate to the song and have connections to the song to tell a good plot/story line
  • I must make my CD cover very attracting and appealing to my target audience and genre.
     I will need to consider:
  1. Fonts
  2. Image
  3. Title
  4. Colour

These are all aspects which help make a good cover and if designed well, it will be a success.

  • The task relates to a magazine advertisement for the CD, which means that if the advertisement is done with high standards and is well published in the magazine, than people will be persuaded to buy the CD

AUDIENCE EXPECATATIONS:

What appealed to the audience about this music genres are:

  • strong emphasis on bass
  • faster tempo featuring a female vocal voice
  • grime
  • The lyrics of Bassline are often focused on love and other issues that may be considered more feminine

DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION- AUDIENCE RESEARCH

DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION- AUDIENCE RESEARCH

QUESTIONNAIRE I have asked a range of 30 people for this questionnaire  from different genders and ages to help get a fair idea for my demographic research for my media products.

1) GENDER: (please tick)

MALE [7]
FEMAL [23]

Looking at gender is an interesting question because I can compare how different genders prefer different genres of music. The graph clearly shows that the majority of the people I asked were female; however I did try to have a variety of gender to make my results fairer. In my findings I found that most females I asked preferred danced/hardcore music than male.

2) AGE: (please tick)

16-21 [22]

22-31 [7]

32-41 [1]

42-50 [0]

51+ [0]

The most popular age was between ’16-21’ which means that my target audience age will be aimed at’16-21 year olds’. This is a good age to target because I can relate to this younger generation. Most dance/ hardcore is aimed at the younger generation due to the fact that most 18year olds can legally go out raving. It would have been interesting to see the difference in age in my audience and how my products would have been affected if I had to target an older audience.

3) WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE GENRE OF MUSIC?

ROCK/HEAVY METAL [1]

TRANCE / ELECTRIC [3]

DANCE / HARDCORE DANCE [12]

R’n’B / HIP HOP [2]

CLASSICAL [1]

 DRUM AND BASS / DUB-STEP [5]

BASSLINE/ SPEED GARAGE [6]

OTHER [ ]

Analyzing the charts, ‘DANCE/ HARDCORE DANCE’ was considered popular in the questionnaire with ‘BASSLINE / SPEED GARAGE’ taking second place. Hardcore is a form of dance music typified by a very fast tempo. Hardcore evolved from rave music around 1991–1993 which shows that ’16-21’ will have been brought up with it, which could be the reason why it’s a popular genre.

Bassline is a type of music related to UK garage that originated from speed garage, and shares characteristics with fellow subgenres Dubstep and grime for their emphasis on bass. The style originated in Sheffield around 2002[1].

This shows that Bassline has only just emerged into the mainstream and it has potential to become popular in the UK, which could be the reasons why it was popular music genre.

I wasn’t surprised to see that ‘HEAVY METAL/ROCK and ‘CLASSICAL’ wasn’t very popular because genre of music like that is typically represented to the older generation and the poll age results were from ’16-21’.

Therefore the genre of music I will be focusing will be Dance/hardcore. My music video will have a popular Dance/Hardcore track.

4) WHAT IS IT THAT APPEALS TO YOU ABOUT THIS MUSIC GENRE? (Please state)

I had a variety of answers, which all related and connected to the 2 most popular music genres…’DANCE/ HARDCORE DANCE’ and ‘BASSLINE/ SPEEDGARAGE.

What appealed to the audience about this music genres are:

  • strong emphasis on bass
  • faster tempo featuring a female vocal voice
  • grime
  • The lyrics of Bassline are often focused on love and other issues that may be considered more feminine
  • It makes me feel happy and It relates to good memories

This will help me into picking a good track for my music promo video, which has to contain: fast tempo, a female vocal voice and good happy song which people will enjoy listening to. The lyrics will need to be catchy in which people can relate to through emotions and past experiences.

5) HAVE YOU EVER BEEN PERSUADED TO BUY A CD AFTER SEEING AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR IT FROM A MAGAZINE?

YES [25]

NO [5]

The majority of the results said ‘YES’ which shows that they have been persuaded to buy a CD after seeing an advertisement for it from a magazine. The task relates to a magazine advertisement for the CD, which means that if the advertisement is done with high standards and is well published in the magazine, than people will be persuaded to buy the CD.

6) HOW DO YOU PREFERE TO LISTEN TO MUSIC?

RADIO [5]

MUSIC CHANNELS/ VIDEOS [10]

PERSONAL SOUND SYSTEMS [3]

IPOD/MP3 PLAYER [10]

INTERNET/ DOWNLOAD [7]

OTHER [ ]

The pie chart shows that ‘MUSICAL CHANNELS/VIDEOS’ were the favored and most popular way to listen to music. This is a very digital technology way to view music. Another popular technology device was the ‘IPOD/MP3 PLAYER’. IPOD’S have only been developed in the 2000’s and is an essential item and common way to listen to music.

The promo music video will be a success due to the fact that the most common way to listen to music is to watch the music channel/ videos.

7) DO YOU ENJOY WATCHING THE VIDEOS TO MUSIC?

YES [28]

NO [2]

IF NO, (please state why) ____________________________

28 people out of 30 said they enjoyed watching the videos to music. This is a popular response which means my audience will have the benefit of this way of method.

8) WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE MUSIC VIDOES (please state)

I had a mix response of answers towards this question and the most popular answer was the dance moves. A good number of ‘DANCE / HARDCORE videos do have very high-quality chirography dance moves which helps make the song more popular and exciting.

The story/ plot to the song were also something people enjoyed about music videos. Most music videos follow a story which can be related to the song being played.

Therefore this means that the track I choose, the music video must relate to the song and have connections to the song to tell a good plot/story line

9) WOULD A CD COVER CONVERT YOU INTO BUYING AN ALBUM/ SINGLE?

YES [19]
NO [11 ]

A staggering 19 out of 30 people said a CD cover would convert them into buying an album/single. Therefore, if a CD cover is eye catching and very well designed than it could help it be brought in this very competitive market. CD’s are displayed to attract the consumer and if a CD cover is that goodly designed to stand out from the rest than this means I must make my CD cover very attracting and appealing to my target audience and genre.
 I will need to consider:

·        Fonts

·        Image

·        Title

10) WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO A COVER OF A CD? (Please state)

A lot of the answers where:

·        Fonts

·        Colours

·        Image

·        Special offers...” Bonus CD track recorded live…”

This is a very competitive market, therefore my CD cover needs to be original however following the codes and conventions of other ‘HARDOCRE/ DANCE’ CD covers. What will stand out the most is the image on the front; therefore I must have a very pretty image, ideally a ‘girl’ which is something common on dance CD covers.

Getting Questionnaires filled out

I will now go and get my questionnaires filled so i can start getting ideas on my target audience, genre.
After that I will analysis my results and put them into charts and tables to see the results clearer and easier.
I will do a summery of findings to see who my target audience is (audience profile), what ideas have been obtained to create a successful products and what my audience expectations are.
Once knowing the popular genre of music, I can start doing an textual analysis and research of CD covers, music videos and advert of that chosen genre.

Audience Research

Demographic information
I have created a questionnaire for marketing research for my products, which will help define an audience which is most suited. This is a basic form of identification and hopefully it will find a target audience and a genre. However I can only assume that everyone in a typical group... 'Female aged 16-21' will have the same attitude.
